Vocabulary Training for iPhones

An online and iPhone-based flash card, which tests a language learner’s understanding of vocabulary with visual and aural prompts. Dubbed Memorize Words, this product uniquely utilizes a SuperMemo-like spaced repetition algorithm and libSpeex to squeeze hours of voice (6300 spoken Spanish words) into a 45 MB package.

It is our goal to expand Memorize Words into other language pairs, port to other mobile devices, and create a suite of portable language learning products beyond vocabulary.

Spanish Word Find

A stand-alone word find game for the iPhone. English or Spanish words are hidden in a grid of letters, while their counterparts are displayed on the top panel. Originally this game was embedded in Memorize Words to help users focus on difficult to memorize words, however it was republished as a stand-alone.

Flash-based Computer Adaptive Testing

Flash-based computer adaptive testing (CAT) often used in computer-based standardize testing. In our example, we compute a ‘Political IQ’ (marketing term) using hundreds of questions about the current political system. Using Componica’s Flash CAT system, a user only answers 29 adaptive multiple-choice questions instead of hundreds of questions to compute a similar score.

We are currently investigating potential for applications for this system: employee evaluation for human resource, Facebook online quizzes, iPhone toy applications, and computer-aided learning.
